Keeping multiple VCF backups is useful, but it can create a problem when those files are eventually combined. A contact saved in three different backups may appear three times after the files are imported or merged. This becomes especially noticeable when contacts have been exported from different phones or applications over time.

The first step is to identify which VCF files are being combined and keep an untouched copy of them. Instead of deleting contacts manually, it is better to compare the records using consistent information such as name, phone number, or email address.

Another consideration is that not every similar-looking contact should automatically be removed. Two people can have the same name but different phone numbers and email addresses. Therefore, checking multiple contact fields can reduce the possibility of removing a legitimate entry.

If there are dozens or hundreds of VCF files, manually checking every contact can become impractical. SysInfo vCard Duplicate Remover is one option designed for this type of cleanup. It can add individual VCF files or folders containing multiple files, apply duplicate filters, and create a single VCF after the cleanup process. The software also provides a log showing information about detected and removed duplicates.

A good workflow is to keep the original backups, scan the copies, select appropriate matching fields, review the results, and then save the cleaned contact collection separately. This approach is safer than editing the only available backup.

Cleaning the data before importing it into a new contact service can also make future searches easier and prevent the same duplicate problem from carrying over to the new platform.
